JCRC Applauds Signing of Iran Sanctions Act into Law

Minneapolis, MN – Steve Hunegs, Executive Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) issued the following statement today applauding President Barack Obama for signing the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act into law:

“Yesterday was a historic moment as our nation took the strongest steps to-date to ensure Iran’s path to nuclear weapons is not an open road.  A nuclear armed Iran is a threat to Israel, a threat to the United States, a threat to moderate Arab countries, and a threat to the entire international community. We cannot allow Iran’s nuclear goals to become a reality. I commend the President for his leadership and his efforts to rally the international community, including the United Nations and European Union, behind Iranian sanctions and I hope the President will continue to work with the international community to implement these meaningful sanctions.

“I also want to thank the Congressional delegations from Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota for unanimously supporting this legislation.

“The Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act expands existing sanctions to cover a range of financial institutions and businesses and imposes a broad ban on direct imports from Iran to the United States and exports from the United States to Iran (exempting food and medicines).  The new sanctions also freeze the assets of Iranians, including Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, who are active in weapons proliferation and terrorism and provide a much-needed legal framework for governments and other investors to divest their portfolios of foreign companies involved in Iran’s energy sector.

“In 2009, the Minnesota State Legislature passed Iran divestment legislation.  Divestment efforts are among the strongest tools we have to help peacefully thwart Iran’s development of a nuclear weapon and curb their funding of international terror groups.  The South Dakota State Legislature passed Iran divestment legislation in 2010.”
