Literacy & Mentoring
Our Work with Literacy and Mentoring
Reading is the fundamental building block of learning. Without adequate reading skills, kids can’t learn. Without learning it’s nearly impossible for kids to grow into adults with the skills and tools necessary to lead a productive life and earn a livable wage.
The mission of the Justice Squared Literacy and Mentoring initiatives is simple: to help at-risk youth read. Our goal is to increase the number of students reading at the appropriate grade level by implementing our literacy-tutoring and reading materials program in schools that need it the most.
Justice Squared trains volunteer literacy tutors and pairs them with students in a one-on-one setting. Research shows that one-on-one instruction is the most effective method in helping kids with below average reading skills to read at the appropriate grade level. As students begin to master the skill of reading they begin to see a brighter future for themselves. Improved reading is just the start of building stronger students, better classrooms and ultimately a better educated and prepared adult.
The Justice Squared literacy initiatives include:
- One-on-one literacy tutoring targeting students who have fallen into achievement gap
- Collecting for donation necessary and appropriate books and materials to help improve the reading levels of students
- “Ten for Ten” reading program in conjunction with the University of Minnesota Athletic Department
- The Twin Cities Jewish Coalition for Literacy (TCJCL)
