JCRC Statement on Death of Arch-Terrorist Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi

October 28, 2019

Minneapolis, MN – Steve Hunegs, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC), issued the following statement:

“In a daring nighttime raid authorized by President Trump and expertly executed by American Special Forces, arch-terrorist Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed over the weekend.  Such missions rely upon presidential leadership, strong alliances, confidence in our career military and intelligence professionals, and American engagement globally.  We are gratified that all four elements, including valuable intelligence from the Kurds, contributed to this blow against international terrorism and horrific barbarism.

“More locally, we were horrified to learn that Attorney General Keith Ellison was once on a ‘hit list’ of ISIS targets.  We agree with the Attorney General’s assessment: ‘[t]he world is better off without him, but I will say his philosophy is still around.’

“We also join in the statement of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and the observations of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Benny Gantz, who is currently tasked with assembling a governing coalition.”

As the public affairs voice of the Jewish community since 1939, the JCRC fights anti-Semitism and prejudice, advocates for Israel, provides Holocaust education, promotes tolerance and social justice, and builds bridges across the Jewish and broader communities.
