Minneapolis, MN – Steve Hunegs, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC), issued the following statement in response to today’s announcement about the release of American Alan Gross from Cuba:
“The Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) welcomes today’s announcement that American Alan Gross has been released from Cuba. After five years of being wrongfully imprisoned in Cuba, Alan Gross is back in the United States with his family today. Chanukiot (menorahs) throughout the world will burn brighter due to today’s news.
“We know the decision to release three Cuban spies from federal imprisonment in Florida was difficult, but we appreciate the efforts of President Obama and Vice President Biden in bringing this about. We also commend Pope Francis for his part in negotiating this outcome.
“The JCRC notes the indefatigable leadership of Ron Halber, the executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, who worked tirelessly to bring Alan Gross home. Kol HaKavod, Ron.”
The JCRC… the public affairs voice of the Jewish community fighting anti-Semitism and prejudice, promoting tolerance and social justice, and representing Jews, individually and collectively.
